Fruit and vegetable growing

Vergers Gazeau have been apple growers for more than 60 years. Today we have over 230 hectares of orchards, a testimony to our extensive know-how and expertise. We also grow strawberries in open fields and in greenhouses, as well as many other species of fruit (pears, kiwifruit, nectarines, peaches, cherries, plums, raspberries, etc.) for direct sales. Since 2010, we have started growing vegetables that our customers can pick for themselves or purchase in our farm shops. Today, our production of fruit (other than apples) and vegetables covers more than 10 hectares.

We attach the utmost importance to both the quality of our produce (customer satisfaction) and the protection of the environment.

All of our orchards have received Vergers écoresponsables certification, which means we carry out sustainable agriculture, more respectful of the environment. Our orchards are equipped with either sprinkler or drip irrigation systems. In order to minimize our impact on the environment, an important part (90%) of the water we use comes from holding ponds we built several decades ago.

Irrigation is managed using probes that measure soil moisture. Our orchards are also 100% equipped with hail nets and frost protection systems (sprinklers, wind machines and oil heaters).

To ensure that the soil in our orchards contains all the necessary minerals and nutrients, laboratory tests are carried out on each plot every three to four years. These tests are supplemented by field soil analyses (pH, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) and observations concerning the physical condition of the soils.
The replanting of orchards is essential in fruit production. This is why, every year, we renew a part of our orchards, either through grafting or by planting new trees, both to adapt our varieties to consumer tastes, as well as growing varieties that are more disease- and pest-resistant.

Each year, in one or more of our orchards, we test innovative production techniques. We are currently testing the installation of composite hedges. These are home to an important diversity of animal life that helps naturally control pests. We have recently installed nesting boxes for tits, for natural insect control, as well as perches for birds of prey in order to regulate populations of small rodents.
